Since moving to Las Vegas in August of 2005, we’ve seen unemployment as low as 3.8%.  But more recently, we’re looking at an unemployment rate of 6.7% here in the Las Vegas Valley.  From where we sit, that’s too damn high (and above the national average).  So, for today’s Living in Las Vegas Podcast, we offer some very specific tips on finding a job in Las Vegas (and beyond).  Show notes:

great show guys… but ugh! (present company excluded), when did corporations start using “recruiters” as a first defense against applicants? can’t say how many times i had to “jump through hoops” doing a phone screen with a “recruiter” just to get a chance to talk to the actual hiring manager. give me a break. lol.

my experience with “recruiters” has been that they are god’s gift to the planet (present company excluded), and they are doing me a favor in just speaking with them. lol. i do have the last laugh, however, when i eventually get to speak with, and possibly do a face-to-face with the hiring manager. if i find the interview going down in flames, i make it appear that the “recruiter” made a mistake in letting me get to this point. guess that “recruiter” will have a short career at that firm. lol.

sounds like it’s all a game, lots of people fighting over too few jobs… good luck job hunters…..

Depending on the job, recruiters have been the first line for as long as I can remember. Most hiring managers simply don’t have the time to do their job AND phone screen possible candidates.

If you’re talking to “God’s Gift” recruiters, I can see why that would color your opinion of them. I’ve had the chance to listen to Melissa phone interview many candidates and she couldn’t be nicer.

Just a tip–I wouldn’t make it a practice of blaming the recruiter. If the recruiter is good, the hiring manager already knows it. It’s just like a previous job…if you’ve got nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

speaking as a former hiring manager for a giant technology company, thankfully i NEVER had to deal with the “recruiter” as middle man. i received the applicants resumes directly, screened them, and chose which candidates to follow-up on, and still do my job. i suppose the advice to not say anything bad does not extend to the shows host, as regards his recent rant againt JetBlue. lol. might be a case of the pot calling the kettle black. lol.

You crack me up, Sparky! I didn’t say you shouldn’t say anything negative *ever*. I said I would not talk crap about somebody (the recruiter) who is consider by many hiring managers as a trusted, *helpful* member of their team. My comments about JetBlue were based on my personal experience. . .they are not my cup of tea. But if I *worked* at JetBlue, knew they were screwed up, and was trying to land a gig at Southwest Airlines, I wouldn’t bring up the JetBlue dirty laundry that I knew about.

    Dear Scott and Melissa,

I just wanted to thank you for including in your last podcast, tips for the unemployed, when preparing their resume and job interviews. I, unfortunately, am one of those unemployed. After working for a Financial Planner for seven years, the President of the firm, I was laid off due to him losing a very large client. I sat and listened to your podcast with pen and pad in hand and thank Melissa from the bottom of my heart in taking the time to dedicate such valuable information from her own valuable experience in these tough times. I know that I have to look at this time as one where I can finally get on with finding something that I really like and am interested in.

Good luck on your listener meet up. I wish I could be there.

Enjoyed the show, wish I could have made it to the meet-up. Looked like fun!

I’m going to be buying a home again in the next 6-12 months and hearing the calls and emails from others triggered a number of thoughts. I have the advantage of looking at homes from the perspective of a 15+ year resident who has seen the town grow and also know where some of the hidden gems are.

I wrote down a ton of thoughts, including a couple of better kept local area secrets. The post is reasonably lengthy, so I put it here:

I’ve also linked back and tracked back to this post from it.

Thanks for your thoughts on house hunting, Ted. Your’s is always a welcomed voice.

In your post, I liked your recommendation about using Google Street View to check out a potential neighboorhood. One caveat–they don’t go within gated communities.

Sad news guys. We are going to have to find a new place for outside drinks next visit. 40/40 Club is closing.

Yeah, I saw that. Guess Jay-z didn’t like the class of clientele the 40/40 was attracting (ie; us!).

    Scott & Melissa,
    Great Podcast as usual… my comments are;
    1. Trip to Boston - BRILLIANT, I wish you had a fly on the wall video camera for that trip. I just hope you enjoyed the trip as much as we enjoyed hearing about it Scott :-)

    2. Shame we couldn’t make the meet up. Would have been great to meet other LILV listeners!

    3. Melissa - The suggestions for Job Hunting was probably the best I have ever heard on the subject, I wish someone had given me that advice many years ago, I wouldn’t have wasted as much time or paper! I wouldn’t say I know how to construct the perfect C.V. (far from it in fact) but I found myself nodding along with all the advice on the basis of C.V.s that I receive these days. That advice was literally gold dust!

Great work guys and look forward to seeing you in October!

    Neil and Sarah,

    1. Had there been a video, it would have been a classic YouTube RAGE thing. . .not pretty!

    2. Would have loved to have you around. . .both at the meetup and the Whitney Villa gathering the next day!!

    3. Appreciate the nice words. We’ve received some nice private emails thanking Melissa for the tips!
