61: October MeetUp at the Asylum Haunted House
October 14, 2008
Greetings, mortals. In this edition of the Living in Las Vegas Podcast, we recount (and listen to) the blood-curdling, bone-chilling screams of our October Listener MeetUp at the ultra-spooky Asylum. Show notes:

For all the ghouls and goblins planning to join us for the October Listener Meetup, which will include a trip to The Asylum haunted house, we will be meeting at 6:30PM at Gordon Biersch in Summerlin. The plan is to have a couple drinks then head on over for the spooky part of the evening. After we all collectively listen to Melissa scream bloody murder for 15-20 minutes, we’ll decide upon a place to continue the evening’s festivities.
Meeting Location: Gordon Biersch (750 S. Rampart Blvd, 702.487.6463)
Date: Saturday, October 11, 2008
Time: 6:30PM for drinks
Attire: Depends (that is, if you have a weak bladder)
As always, Melissa and I are looking forward to another great time with our listeners!
See you on Saturday!
September 18, 2008
By popular demand, we’ve decided to organize our second LiLV Listener Meetup for Saturday, October 11, 2008. Now this isn’t going to be just some simple, sit-around-and-drink meetup. . .no, no, no. . .we’ve already rode that pony. Instead, it’s going to be three-Three-THREE things in one:
- Sit around and drink (a bit, okay okay, why ruin a good thing)
- Visit “The Asylum”, reportedly a VERY scary haunted house in Summerlin
- Eat, Drink and be
ScaryMerry at a dining/drinking establishment to be named later
If you’re wondering about item #2, here’s the scoop: one of our listener’s favorite episodes continues to be the Hotel Fear show, which primarily features Melissa screaming like a banshee for 20+ minutes. (The woman has pipes.) A week or so ago, I received an email, which lead to a phone call with the folks who run Hotel Fear and The Asylum.
Of course, I expected they wanted to hire Melissa as a professional screamer.
But no, that wasn’t it. Instead, to my surprise, they told me that they loved the show so much that they wanted to offer us 10 tickets to experience The Asylum, at no charge.
Free stuff? I love free stuff. And so understandably, I accepted their offer.
As I type this, four of those tickets are already spoken for. If you’d like to be one of the other six victims to join us as we go Screaming Through Summerlin, and you know your calendar is open for such fun, be one of the first six people to email me at lilvscreamer@livinginlv.com and I’ll put you on the free-ticket list. (Others are welcomed to join us of course, but I can only comped the first six folks.)
Remember, you want to make sure you’re available on OCTOBER 11, 2008 before requesting the free ticket.
We’ll finalize the time in another post but I’m guessing we’ll first meet around 6PM(ish) for drinks and enter The Asylum at 7:30PM(ish).
One final thing–we will be recording our experience for a LiLV podcast so if you don’t want your friends to know you’re a screamer (Mark G?), you may not want to get tickets. . .but we’d love to have you join us for drinks and dinner!

The first ever Living in Las Vegas Listener Meet Up was a GREAT SUCCESS!! As I walked out to Trader Vic’s outside patio, I was immediately greeted by Tim and Nanette (from the For Whatever Reason Podcast). A few minutes later, David and Alicia (local LVers) joined us and there seemed to be a steady flow of folks joining us for drinks, laughs and storytelling.
We’ll talk more about the meetup on the next podcast (lots of audio clips and video, though the video might not make it on the site) but to put a fine point on how much fun we had. . .all the Las Vegas locals hung around until late in the evening (midnight, I think). . .at which point we decided to EXTEND the party to today! Rich, Cheryl, David, Alicia, Don and Jan will be joining Melissa and me at the Whitney Villa for more fun!
59: Tips on Finding a Job in Las Vegas: From a Senior Recruiter’s Perspective
August 12, 2008
Since moving to Las Vegas in August of 2005, we’ve seen unemployment as low as 3.8%. But more recently, we’re looking at an unemployment rate of 6.7% here in the Las Vegas Valley. From where we sit, that’s too damn high (and above the national average). So, for today’s Living in Las Vegas Podcast, we offer some very specific tips on finding a job in Las Vegas (and beyond). Show notes:
- Weather/Pool Report: Hot and Dry, like my love and humor
- JetBlue? More like JetBlows.

- Listener Email: Moving to Vegas, taking back her title, killing deer, garage doors, show suggestions

August 7, 2008
It is well established that I believe the nectar of the Gods is Tanqueray and Tonic. . .a refreshing drink that proves there is hope for all of mankind. However, I will be zigging when I normally zag when it comes to libation ingestion when joining the folks at the LiLV Listener Meet Up taking place on August 15, 5PM, at Trader Vic’s. I would invite those that join us to try something not found at your typical lounge.
My recommendation? Trader Vic’s Kava Bowl. You got to love a drink that serves four in a communal bowl and features a variety of rums, liquors and fruit juice.
See you in about a week!
August 4, 2008
Okay, here’s the scoop. Many of the folks who emailed us at meetup@livinginlv.com suggested our gathering should take place at the Whitney Villa. I think this is a great idea(!). . .and we were moving toward making that happen when we got word that some of our guest’s ankle monitors would not let them travel to our neck of the woods.
Maybe next time, Troy. (I keed, I keed.)
Anywho, the day with the most votes turned out to be Friday, August 15th. This works well–it gives us a chance to meet but doesn’t cut into what may be the last night in Las Vegas (Saturday) for many of the folks attending the New Media Expo. here’s the scoop:
Location: Trader Vic’s (in The Miracle Mile Shopping Center, attached to Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino)
Date: Friday, August 15
Time: 5PM
Attire: Probably a good idea
Melissa and I are looking forward to meeting y’all! And remember, there’s a gift waiting for the first 10 people who introduce him/herself to me OR my Naughty Jelly Sweet!!
July 16, 2008
I’m telling you, our listeners are a lovely bunch of coconuts! As I mentioned in episode 58, we were thinking about organizing an informal meet up with our listeners in conjunction with the upcoming New Media Expo. Based upon the personal emails I received, we’d be crazy NOT to meet with some of the nicest people I’ve ever heard from!
We’ll pick a day (more like early evening) soon. And to show my appreciation, I’ve decided that I’ve got a little gift set aside for the first ten LiLV listeners who shake my hand and introduce himself/herself. (And no, the gift does not require that you buy me a drink. . .that would be uncalled for, not something I would ever expect, and I drink Tanqueray and Tonic.)
The Expo is happening from August 14-16. My session is on the Thursday the 14th but I’m open to meet any day/night. For those interested in joining us for a drink or two, how about sending an email to meetup@livinginlv.com and tell me what night works for you. Based upon the majority, we’ll post a date/time on the website.
Stay tuned!
