The first ever Living in Las Vegas Listener Meet Up was a GREAT SUCCESS!! As I walked out to Trader Vic’s outside patio, I was immediately greeted by Tim and Nanette (from the For Whatever Reason Podcast). A few minutes later, David and Alicia (local LVers) joined us and there seemed to be a steady flow of folks joining us for drinks, laughs and storytelling.
We’ll talk more about the meetup on the next podcast (lots of audio clips and video, though the video might not make it on the site) but to put a fine point on how much fun we had. . .all the Las Vegas locals hung around until late in the evening (midnight, I think). . .at which point we decided to EXTEND the party to today! Rich, Cheryl, David, Alicia, Don and Jan will be joining Melissa and me at the Whitney Villa for more fun!
59: Tips on Finding a Job in Las Vegas: From a Senior Recruiter’s Perspective
August 12, 2008
Since moving to Las Vegas in August of 2005, we’ve seen unemployment as low as 3.8%. But more recently, we’re looking at an unemployment rate of 6.7% here in the Las Vegas Valley. From where we sit, that’s too damn high (and above the national average). So, for today’s Living in Las Vegas Podcast, we offer some very specific tips on finding a job in Las Vegas (and beyond). Show notes:
- Weather/Pool Report: Hot and Dry, like my love and humor
- JetBlue? More like JetBlows.
- Discovering Las Vegas with my Magellan 1412
- Listener Meet Up on August 15 at 5PM at Trader Vic’s. More Info. Drink Recommendation.
- Check out the 2008 New Media Expo in Las Vegas (August 14-16)!
- Construction on 215
- Listener Audio: Show thoughts, baking cakes, and jewelry shows
- Listener Email: Moving to Vegas, taking back her title, killing deer, garage doors, show suggestions
- More LiLV Friends added!
- Tip’s on Finding a Job in Las Vegas
- Resumes
- Networking
- Job Boards (National and Local)
- Interview (telephone, preparation for onsite, interview tips, follow up)

It is well established that I believe the nectar of the Gods is Tanqueray and Tonic. . .a refreshing drink that proves there is hope for all of mankind. However, I will be zigging when I normally zag when it comes to libation ingestion when joining the folks at the LiLV Listener Meet Up taking place on August 15, 5PM, at Trader Vic’s. I would invite those that join us to try something not found at your typical lounge.
My recommendation? Trader Vic’s Kava Bowl. You got to love a drink that serves four in a communal bowl and features a variety of rums, liquors and fruit juice.
See you in about a week!

Okay, here’s the scoop. Many of the folks who emailed us at meetup@livinginlv.com suggested our gathering should take place at the Whitney Villa. I think this is a great idea(!). . .and we were moving toward making that happen when we got word that some of our guest’s ankle monitors would not let them travel to our neck of the woods.
Maybe next time, Troy. (I keed, I keed.)
Anywho, the day with the most votes turned out to be Friday, August 15th. This works well–it gives us a chance to meet but doesn’t cut into what may be the last night in Las Vegas (Saturday) for many of the folks attending the New Media Expo. here’s the scoop:
Location: Trader Vic’s (in The Miracle Mile Shopping Center, attached to Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino)
Date: Friday, August 15
Time: 5PM
Attire: Probably a good idea
Melissa and I are looking forward to meeting y’all! And remember, there’s a gift waiting for the first 10 people who introduce him/herself to me OR my Naughty Jelly Sweet!!

So Melissa and I are walking past “Chrome” at Santa Fe Station, getting ready to check out the Dark Knight (yes Ledger is good as the Joker…Oscar worthy? Not from where I sat.) and who do we see/hear doing a sound check? Why, it’s Bo Bice, of American Idol fame! Sounded good! Great voice, very rockish sound. I expect that gig will be sold out.

Just saw on a local TV station (Channel 3, NBC) that Trump Towers is planning to lay off 73 people which equates to about 20% of their workforce. According to the report, this is due largely because the close rate for their condos dropped significantly as a result of the ongoing mortgage crisis. According to the report, “only a small fraction of the condos have been sold.”
Interestingly, Neil from the UK and I stopped by Trump Towers about a month ago to take a quick peek. It was weird–I expected it to be super fancy-shmancy, and I guess it was–lot’s of gold stuff everywhere–but it didn’t look very significant. Gold? Check. Classy? Uh…not so much. Neil and I both thought that if you were to compare the look of Trump Towers to that of Wynn Las Vegas, there was no comparison. Wynn looks much more substantial, more thick. (To be honest, I thought Red Rock Casino looked nicer.) Granted, we just checked out the lobby and the pool (from a distance. . .peering through the workout area), but we kept scratching our heads, wondering what the money was buying folks who chose to invest in a Trump Tower condo.
Hopefully, those 73 folks will be able to find work elsewhere, perhaps at Encore or Aliante Casino.

I’m telling you, our listeners are a lovely bunch of coconuts! As I mentioned in episode 58, we were thinking about organizing an informal meet up with our listeners in conjunction with the upcoming New Media Expo. Based upon the personal emails I received, we’d be crazy NOT to meet with some of the nicest people I’ve ever heard from!
We’ll pick a day (more like early evening) soon. And to show my appreciation, I’ve decided that I’ve got a little gift set aside for the first ten LiLV listeners who shake my hand and introduce himself/herself. (And no, the gift does not require that you buy me a drink. . .that would be uncalled for, not something I would ever expect, and I drink Tanqueray and Tonic.)
The Expo is happening from August 14-16. My session is on the Thursday the 14th but I’m open to meet any day/night. For those interested in joining us for a drink or two, how about sending an email to meetup@livinginlv.com and tell me what night works for you. Based upon the majority, we’ll post a date/time on the website.
Stay tuned!

One of the reasons many folks who live in Las Vegas believe the good times are soon to return has to do with the upcoming hiring wave for all the new properties being build on the Strip. Encore Wynn Las Vegas is the latest to announce its hiring plan. If you’re interested in working for Steve Wynn, here’s the place to go.
